Adult growth hormone deficiency in patients with fibromyalgia.
نویسنده
چکیده
Adult growth hormone (GH) deficiency is a well-described clinical syndrome with many features reminiscent of fibromyalgia. There is evidence that GH deficiency as defined in terms of a low insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) level occurs in approximately 30% of patients with fibromyalgia and is probably the cause of some morbidity. It seems most likely that impaired GH secretion in fibromyalgia is related to a physiologic dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA) with a resulting increase in hypothalamic somatostatin tone. It is postulated that impaired GH secretion is secondary to chronic physical and psychological stressors. It appears that impaired GH secretion is more common than clinically significant GH deficiency with low IGF-1 levels. The severe GH deficiency that occurs in a subset of patients with fibromyalgia is of clinical relevance because it is a treatable disorder with demonstrated benefits to patients.

Growth Hormone Treatment of FM and CFS
It has been shown that chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia patients have abnormal sleep patterns with a deficiency in stage 4 sleep (1). Stage 4 sleep is closely related to the pulsatile secretion of growth hormone and 80% of the total daily secretion of growth hormone is during this stage. It has also been shown that chronic fatigue syndrome/fibromyalgia patients are unable to mount a no...
متن کاملGrowth hormone in musculoskeletal pain states.
Growth hormone is essential for normal linear growth and the attainment of an adult mature height. It also plays an important role in cartilage growth and the attainment of normal bone mass. There is only one rheumatic disorder, namely acromegaly, in which abnormalities of growth hormone production play a major etiologic role. However, there is increasing appreciation that suboptimal growth hor...
متن کاملA randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of growth hormone in the treatment of fibromyalgia.
PURPOSE The cause of fibromyalgia (FM) is not known. Low levels of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), a surrogate marker for low growth hormone (GH) secretion, occur in about one third of patients who have many clinical features of growth hormone deficiency, such as diminished energy, dysphoria, impaired cognition, poor general health, reduced exercise capacity, muscle weakness, and cold int...

Background: b-Thalassemia major is a serious medical problem.Growth retardation is commonly seen in poly-transfused b-thalassemia patients. The exact mechanism of short stature in childrenwith thalassemia major is not well understood, however, it isbelieved to be multi-factorial.Objective: To study the growth state and its relationship to growthhormone (GH) deficiency in b-thalassemia patients....
